Two weeks into the new year, there’s still a shimmer of possibility in the air. This is the season of fresh starts, when we map out where we want to go, who we want to become, and what we hope to experience. Everything feels open. The road ahead looks smooth and full of promise. Optimism runs high.
So here is my one resolution for the year: Do less.
Before you raise an eyebrow, let me explain. I don’t mean be less. I mean live more fully by doing less. I’m choosing presence over pressure. Moments over momentum. Today, over “what’s next.”
This past weekend reminded me why.
It was busy, yes, but what filled me wasn’t the food or the plans. It was the connections. The quick hellos from neighbors as I walked by. The brief small talk that somehow still felt warm. Catching up with friends over coffee or a shared appetizer. Laughing along in a group text with people I couldn’t physically be with but still felt close to, because they understand the humor in two lines and a single emoji.
We tend to believe life’s best moments require a big event: a trip, a celebration, something worthy of a calendar invite. But the truth is, it’s the simple and real moments that linger. The ordinary that turns out to be extraordinary.
That’s why I’m choosing to do less. Date nights will look like pizza in front of the fireplace. Joy will be found in the in-between. Now I must run — the weekend is calling! Frozen egg sandwiches from Costco are headed for the microwave. Frozen fruit and yogurt will become smoothies. Coffee pods will meet the machine. But I’ll do it all with soft shoulders instead of tension, with a lighter heart instead of a rushed one.
Because more often than we realize …
Less is truly more.
