Happy November, friends! How is it possible that we are already sailing (see what I did there?) into the holiday season? Coming off a busy October, my mind has barely had time to wind down and mentally prepare for the hustle coming up. There are so many lists to conquer:
- Order the turkey and plan holiday menus
- Winterize the yard
- Winterize the boats (one still in the water!)
- Holiday shopping
… and those are just a few. My lists at this point have their own list. So what do you do when you are running full throttle? You take a minute to drop the anchor and relax so you don’t burn out the engine. That is what this past weekend was for me. My only plan was not to have any plans. We all need that—time to float in life without plotting out the next navigational destination. To sit with a book or watch that series you have been meaning to catch up on. To scroll through social media endlessly without thought and bookmark recipes you will never cook on Instagram (Crab Rangoon shot glasses filled with ahi tuna—seriously, I am obsessed with this idea).
The point is… we all need a moment to just be still. Now, that can be uncomfortable sometimes. You can see the laundry that has to be turned over and hear others talking about how their house is decorated and how their shopping is almost done. You don’t want to admit that the only thing you accomplished that day was a shower and ordering a pizza while you binge-watched Hallmark Christmas movies and googled quick weekend getaways in warm weather.
But friends, you need this. Take a few hours, a day, a weekend, or even longer, and enjoy the rhythm and tranquility you get when the sun is strong, sitting in the cockpit with great music playing through the speakers. You are a gentle being, moved by the current or the wind in a swaying motion similar to that of a child in its mother’s arms. There is nothing to do—just moments to be. Be content, be present, be silent, be engaged with those you’re with.
